'Equipt' bundle offers Student versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote

Microsoft has unveiled a new subscription service for Office aimed at consumers.

The Equipt offering will combine the Student versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote in a single package.

The bundle will also include Microsoft's OneCare security suite, along with a range of Windows Live web services, including webmail, IM and photo hosting. read more

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Two French students who were found stabbed to death in a burned-out London apartment were the victims of a "frenzied, brutal, horrific attack," police said Thursday, as they appealed for information about the case.

Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez, both 23, were bound and stabbed multiple times in the head, neck, torso, and back, said Mick Duthie, a detective with London's Metropolitan Police. read more

Thomas Beatie, the transsexual man who made headlines after becoming pregnant, has given give birth to a baby girl today.

The birth at Bend, Oregon, was natural, according to a source, who discounted earlier reports that Mr Beatie planned to have a Caesarean section.

"She's really cute, really pretty," the source told ABC News. read more

PARIS: A prosecutor said Thursday that Continental Airlines and two of its employees had been ordered to stand trial on involuntary manslaughter charges related to the crash of a Concorde supersonic airliner in 2000 near Paris in which 113 people died.

In addition to Continental, the prosecutor also filed involuntary manslaughter charges against two employees of the Concorde program and an employee of the French civil aviation authority. read more

Google is making its Google Talk instant-messaging application available for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch.

One of Google's software engineers posted the news in a blog on Wednesday.

"In addition to sending your friends Gmail messages from your iPhone, you can now chat with them while you're on the move, too!" Adam Connors, of Google's mobile team said in the blog.

The application doesn't require any software to be installed or downloaded. read more

It’s now official. Firefox 3 has been officially entered into the Guinness Book of World Records as the most downloaded software in a 24-hour period. Last month on the first day of its release Firefox 3 was downloaded over 8 million times; 8,002,530 to be exact.

Of course, Firefox3 didn’t exactly have any competition since this was a new world record category that they just made up, but we can’t deny that over 8 million downloads in a day is an impressive feat in any case. read more

Google is to be forced to release the records of every video watched on YouTube, including user names and web addresses, to entertainment company Viacom after a US federal court ruling.

Viacom, which is pursuing a $1bn (£500m) copyright infringement lawsuit against Google, wants the information to determine the amount of copyright material on YouTube. The disclosure could increase Google's liability if Viacom wins the court case. read more

The Colombian authorities say they have rescued Ingrid Betancourt and three Americans held by rebels in Colombia.

Ms Betancourt, a French-Colombian politician, has been held for more than six years by the rebel Farc group and is said to be in very poor health.

She is the group's highest-profile hostage and the French government has made securing her release a priority.

The Farc group has been fighting to overthrow the Colombian government for more than 40 years. read more

Apple is crowding out other orders for flash memory at Samsung through orders connected to the iPhone, according to reports from some of Samsung's smaller customers. The American company has allegedly ordered 50 million of Samsung's eight gigabit (one gigabyte) chips that are primarily intended for the iPhone 3G and is putting enough pressure on Samsung's supply that the Korean firm is informing smaller firms that their own orders are being reduced to keep Apple in healthy supply. read more

A Palestinian bulldozer driver ran amok in Jerusalem, killing at least three people and and injuring dozens.

A construction bulldozer driven by a Palestinian from east Jerusalem rammed a bus and several other vehicles on the Israeli capital's Jaffa Street at noon Wednesday, crushing at least three people to death and injuring as many as 30 other people. read more
